Hit The Deck

LIFE opined in 1965, is “the most exhilarating and dangerous joyriding device this side of the hot rod. A two-foot piece of wood or plastic mounted on wheels, it yields to the skillful user the excitements of of skiing or surfing. To the unskilled it gives the effect of having stepped on a banana peel while dashing down the back stairs. It is also a menace to limb and even to life.”

Spring Breakers (2012)

This trailer is brought to you from the official YouTube channel of Selena Gomez and it features a really adorable little send off from the cast in the final seconds. I chose this one because it is sooo super long, and you can really get a feel for the entire movie because chances are: you don’t want to watch this movie.

For a certain kind of person, that would be a mistake. Rachel and I went to go see this at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square which is a charming venue and had some sort of fancy live event going on simultaneously. Half the audience were older married couples and that half of the audience stormed out halfway through the movie.

As you can guess this is a very provocative film, so I don’t blame people for being provoked. If you can take a step back and admire its tenacity though, it’s also a very well made piece of cinema. Rachel and I talked about it for hours afterwards. It’s so tightly edited, so carefully conceived and really has something to say. If you don’t mind experimental filmmaking, an uncomfortable viewing experience and pop music I would highly recommend giving this movie a try.

Then you can join me and Rachel is whispering “spring break forever bitches” at inopportune moments for the rest of our lives at least. It’s been very amusing.
